A day in the life of a valuer…..
Well my last installment was about Planes (a Jet anyway!) so it is only fitting this one is about Trains, or at least rail maintenance. This venture had me completing a valuation on some Rail Tampers and Ballast Regulators. These machines are used for track maintenance, where the Tamper in simple terms lifts the rail track, shakes and re-settles the ballast (train track bed of stones) and then places the tracks back on top of the ballast. The Ballast Regulator then comes along behind the Tamper and much like a road grader smooths the ballast away from the rails and sleepers, leaving it like new.
The odd thing here is, if you didn’t know, is that our forefathers had some strange ideas on rail tracks and we have different size gauges (width of the tracks) across the country….in simple terms you cannot use the same machine in Victoria, as say one in NSW!
